Inaugural Concert at The Granada
Nine young musical talents, chosen from a highly competitive field of Granada MAC (Music & Arts Conservatory) students, will perform with a full orchestra, - under the musical direction of William Prinzing Briggs, Kentucky Youth Orchestras music director - for the 22nd Annual Young Soloists Showcase on May 18, 3 p.m. at the newly- restored Granada. The winners include violinist Anna Cocoran playing the Bruch Concerto No. 2 in D minor; flutist Do-Hee Jeong will perform Chaminade’s Concertino in D Major; violinist Camille Miller, movements one and two of Mozart’s Concerto in D Major; cellist Paul Schiess, the third movement of a Bach concerto; pianist Michael Sikich, a movement from Beethoven’s Concerto No. 1 in C Major; pianist Sophia Zheng will perform a movement from Mozart’s Concerto K414 in A Major; pianist Ellen Feldman performs the Grieg Piano Concerto in a Minor; pianist Sio Tepper with a movement from Rachmaninoff’s Piano concerto No 1; and violinist Susanna Vinogradski performs DeBeriot’s Scene de Ballet. An investment in the future of dance
More than 15 pre-professional teen choreographers are busy working with their dancers, mentors and their creative imaginations in anticipation of their performances in Santa Barbara Dance Alliance’s 13th Annual ON THE VERGE: Teen Choreographer’s Showcase on Saturday, May 31, 8 p.m. at the Marjorie Luke Theatre, 721 E. Cota Street The teens are guided through the creative process in preparing a variety of performances in styles ranging from ballet and jazz to flamenco and hip-hop. They also learn production skills that include contracts, ticket sales, advertising and PR and media relations. Under Heather Carney Shea’s production direction, the lineup of teen choreographers includes: Daniela Zermeno (modern/jazz. flamenco), Pavel Machuca Zavarzina (modern), Byrn Perkins (ballet, pointe), Robin Zelko and Taylor Fisher (modern) Kalia Hayes (jazz), Joslyn Wood (contemporary), Gianna Burright and Tenaya Cowsill (contemporary), Nathaniel Jinnies (lyrical), Nikki Pfeiffer (lyrical) Alyssa Bustillos, Hannah Gonchoff, and Jillian Denault (hip-hop) and Anastasia Sugawihia. Join forces at the Granada for
Carmina Burana
Although usually performed in concert as a cantata, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana was intended as a staged work involving dance, choreography and visual design and will come to life in a showcase of these artistries when State Street Ballet and The Santa Barbara Choral Society combine talents for a program at the newly-restored Granada on Saturday, May 31 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, June 1 and 2 p.m. The collaboration between these two new resident companies of the Granada features world premiere choreography by William Soleau and a full orchestra. Carmina Burana has found a unique niche in both contemporary culture and the classical world with its opening and closing movements, O Fortuna, which have been used in hundreds of films and TV commercials as well as classical concert performances. A Pops and a Free Children’s Concert
Highlight Youth Symphony Season
Under the musical direction of conductor Andrew Radford, the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony showcases its season with two annual May concerts. The first, a free for all ages Children’s Concert, is Sunday, May 18, 2 p.m. at the Carrillo Recreation Center, 100 E. Carrillo Street. (Please note this year’s change of venue for this concert.) The program features selections that will appeal to all age levels, drawn from the program of the symphony’s companion May “Pops” concert, as well as appearances by the Junior String Orchestra and the Intermezzo Strings, led by Mary Beth Woodruff. The second concert, a “Pops” concert, is Sunday, May 25, 7 p.m. at the Lobero Theatre. The program features music by The Beatles, medleys from the films Wicked and The Wizard of OZ and selections from Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Returns as Soloist for Final Season Concert
Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra (SBCO) welcomes back former concertmaster, violinist Michelle Mi-Kyung Kim, as guest soloist with the Mendelssohn’s Violin Concert in E. Minor, Op. 64. for the last concert of the season on Tuesday, May 13, 7:30 p.m. at the Lobero Theatre. Kim, who is currently assistant concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, was concertmaster for the SBCO from 1994 to 2001 and, along with solo recitals, has performed as a soloist with orchestras nationally and internationally. The program also includes Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C major, Op. 61, featuring the seldom-heard brass section, conducted by SBCO music director, Heiichiro Ohyama.
